A couple of the underlying flavors were cumin, garlic, turmeric, and cardamom. We just happen to have all these because one of favorite stores just happens to be Penzey's spices. Now in Homewood, we have been dedicated customers since they were in Inverness near Kohls. The prices are great and the freshness can't be found in your typical supermarket! If you haven't checked it out, you need to:)
I will also take this opportunity to endorse another one of our favorite products...rishi tea's masala chai. You can enjoy this hot or cold and it is AMAZING! Kinda pricey at some stores, we ordered them on Amazon and got a pretty good discount. We also have purchased it at Whole Foods.
The dishes we attemped were curry chicken, kheere ka raita (a cool yogurt and cucumber salad), sookhi bhindi (sauteed okra), masaledar basmati (spicey rice), and gagar ka halva (the yummy carrot dessert).
Our favorite dishes that we made were the okra side dish and the carrot dessert. Super flavorful and could really be eaten with many other types of cuisines. If you haven't tried indian food before and love flavor and spice..I would definitely recommend giving it a try. Madhur Jaffrey's book is a great way to start too. She explains everything from what the spices are to how to serve each dish. We can't wait to try some of the other recipes soon.
My parents also came to town this weekend. We had a very relaxing day at the botanical gardens and also attended mass at St. Pauls Cathedral. Henry did great until the chimes during the service. He slept right up til then and then burst out in tears. Lance quickly took him out for the rest of the mass and we got a bunch of giggles from those around us. Next time, I will have to predict the bells...and use earmuffs when they are ringing!!
